With the rise of cloud-based applications and services; traditional locally installed software is becoming less common. Many companies are shifting to subscription-based models, requiring an internet connection & cloud authentication to access essential tools. While this brings convenience and cross-device access, it also raises concerns about data privacy, long-term costs, and software control.
As users; we often face the dilemma of choosing between cloud convenience and the reliability of locally installed software. What happens if a cloud service shuts down / if a company changes its pricing model?

I’ve seen a few examples where teams started simple but later had to rethink everything, and after digging into those stories, I ended up reading more about how companies handle custom software for insurtech startups when they begin scaling. What stood out is that custom solutions aren’t always about complexity — sometimes they’re just about having the freedom to build exactly what you need without constantly working around limitations.
